Apologies for the intermittent posting on #HRBookClub, but I totally wasn’t feeling the June selection.
- I don’t believe in the prosperity gospel, and the book used religion in a way that left me feeling uncomfortable.
- The book felt like a recycled version of Oprah’s messaging with a splash of “The Secret,” which is a rehash of Oprah. So, that’s pretty meta.
- I don’t hate self-help books, but I felt like this book tried a little too hard.
But I respect what Jen Sincero built for herself because her book is at Target of all places. Plus, I’m working on my book, and it’s hard not to sound preachy and self-congratulatory at the same time.
“You are a Badass” is not my jam, but it might be yours. That’s cool. We can agree to disagree.
I’ll be back on Monday with our July #HRBookClub choice. Later this month, we’re launching a Facebook group but will double-down on our commitment to Twitter so that everybody feels included.
